About Tim Ryan Communications

Tim Ryan is a Public Relations and Public Affairs consultant based in Dublin.

Tim RyanHaving attended secondary school in his native Tipperary he later attended UCC where he graduated with an honours degree in English and Latin. He later worked as a freelance journalist in Tipperary before joining the Cork Examiner as a senior journalist in 1985.

In 1987, his career took him to Dublin where he worked for the Irish Press Group as Agricultural Correspondent. There he had responsibility for editing the farming section of the paper. He later wrote on politics for the paper.

He was promoted to Assistant News Editor and News Editor where he had responsibility for editing the news section of the groups’ flagship paper, the Irish Press. In this capacity he wrote on all current topics of the day: health; environment; transport; welfare and much more. Among Tim Ryan’s skills is the taking of often complex and specialist issues and presenting them in straightforward, easily understood language and doing so to tight deadlines.

Self-motivated, following the closure of the Irish Press in 1997, he took the opportunity to set up his own Public Relations and Public Affairs company, Tim Ryan Communications.

As Public Affairs advisor, he monitors debates in the Houses of the Oireachtas and lobbies Government, Oireachtas Committees, TDs and senators on ongoing day-to-day issues. He also drafts and edits regular reports and Budget submissions.

Tim’s natural ability to organise and innovate has led him to hold various positions of throughout his career. A former Chairperson of the Association of European Journalists (Irish Section), he is currently its Treasurer. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Press & PR branch of the NUJ. He has also been the Irish representative for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and, in this role, has given overseas workshops on the Irish democratic system to parliamentarians and candidates in Eastern European countries including Slovakia, Croatia and Bosnia/Herzegovina.

He is author of a number of books, including three political biographies The Longford Leader, (Albert Reynolds), A Safe Pair of Hands (Dick Spring) and Mara, PJ – a Christmas bestseller in 1992. He also edited the history of the IAWS Group to mark its Centenary in 1997.

In June 2011 Tim was appointed to the Government’s High Level Group on Business Regulation.  He is also writing a thesis for an M. Comm in Government Policy in UCC.

Tim is a keen supporter of the Tipperary hurling team and is a member of the Tipperary Supporters Club. In his leisure time, Tim is a keen walker and organic gardener and in good weather enjoys driving his classic Mercedes!
